While the battle to be first out of the gate in terms of Snow White stories seems to have been won by Relativity’s Tarsem Singh directed/Lily Collin-starring comedy drama twist take, Universal has clearly decided to fight back in terms of star power and has offered Hugh Jackman the male lead role in Snow White and the Huntsma****n.
Sensing blood in the water after Darren Aronofsky pulled out of directing The Wolverine (not to mention the delays likely as Japan recovers from its recent, devastating natural disasters), the studio is looking to see if it can lure Jackman to star in Huntsman alongside Kristen Stewart’s Snow.
The film finds the huntsman dispatched to kill Snow White by the evil Queen (Charlize Theron) as usual, but instead of simply abandoning her as in the original tale, he agrees to help train her to fight back.
Viggo Mortensen had been negotiating to play the role, but has since dropped out. Rupert Sanders, however, is still in the director’s chair and Deadline reports that Hossein Amini may come in to polish the script before shooting kicks off in September.
