There have been rumours before that Hugh Jackman is ready to step down from playing Logan/Wolverine for the X-Men movies. But on Instagram this weekend, the actor dropped the biggest hint yet that his days as the fast-healing mutant hero are numbered.

While he’s been rumoured as cropping up in X-Men Apocalypse – because let’s face it, would it really be a proper** X-Men** movie without him? – the post appears to point to his reunion with The Wolverine’s director James Mangold for a third solo Wolverine outing, which is bubbling away in the development for a potential 2017 release. That, of course, would follow Apocalypse, which is about to start shooting next month ready for it to arrive next year.

Jackman has said in the past that he’s been considering handing over the mantle of the hairy hero, not wanting to stay in the role forever. Given how long he’s been associated with Logan, starting with 2000’s** X-Men**, it’ll be a little strange to consider Wolverine on screen without him. But at least it appears we’ll have a few years yet to see him call people “Bub”.

Jackman will be seen this year as Blackbeard in Joe Wright’s Pan (out July 17) and is shooting the Eddie The Eagle film alongside Kingsman’s Taron Egerton for director Dexter Fletcher.
