A while ago we reported on toy behemoth Mattel's plans to invade cinema with every single one of its properties. Sadly there's still not much sign of a Masters of the Universe happening anytime soon, but Legendary Pictures have just put the keys in the ignition of a Hot Wheels movie.
Frankly it's amazing it hasn't happened already, given the nostalgia value in the massively popular range of toy motors (Empire has a friend in Pittsburgh whose dad has about ten thousand of them, dating back to 1968 - he keeps them in barrels) and the sexy road race potential.
It's not for want of trying: McG was attached to a Hot Wheels film in 2003, and there were attempts more recently with Joel Silver producing, until Speed Racer tanked and the brakes were applied.
Following Fast Five though, Hollywood is starting to like the idea again. Interestingly, Variety's story specifies that the film's demographic won't be "kids that buy Hot Wheels", but "an edgier pic" along those Fast and Furious lines. Are those films edgy? We just thought they were daft...
We won't see this terribly soon, since it's just a concept at the moment, with no writers or directors attached. Any approaches you think would really work? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.
