Thanks to his complicated private life and legendary cinematic output, Alfred Hitchcock remains a compelling figure for those looking to make films about filmmakers. Now there’s another push to craft a story about the man, with Anthony Hopkins once again in the spotlight as a likely performer to channel Hitch.
It’s not the first time Hopkins has been approached about taking on Hitchcock’s jowly visage – he was attached to the adaptation of Stephen Rebello’s book **Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of **Psycho back in 2007 when Glee’s Ryan Murphy was in the director’s chair.
That version never quite coalesced, but production company Montecito is unbowed and is trying again, this time opening talks with Anvil! The Story of Anvil director Sacha Gervasi to possibly take up the job. He’s considering several job possibilities since his excellent documentary about the heavy metal group looking to stage a comeback, so there’s no guarantee that he’ll lock in for the Hitchcock film. But he’s certainly interested.
And it’s not tough to see why – Rebello’s non-fiction tome, which was originally published in 1998, follows Hitchcock’s decision to make Psycho when he was at the height of his powers. Despite his clout, no one believed in the project, so he scrabbled together the money and the rest is stabby, plot twisty history.
