It seems hardly possible that we’re already into April (stand clear for Empire’s Man In LA to start wittering on about the passage of time and how, when he were a lad, all this website were basic HTML fields), but April it is and Easter is just around the corner. So it’s not too surprising that a family friendly blend of animation and the Easter Bunny should score a win at the box office, even if the reviews were mixed more than a Cadbury’s Crème Egg. Hop took the top spot, nabbing a healthy $38 million in the process.
But Moon director Duncan Jones likely won’t be feeling like he’s been pranked – his second film, heady sci-fi thriller Source Code – arrived in second place with a decent $15 million. Not too shabby, considering the budget was $32 million. Also doing well thanks to a low budget was horror thriller Insidious, which raked in $13.5 million in its first weekend of release.
Last week’s surprise champ, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, fell to fourth with $10.2 million, while Limitless sank to fifth and $9.4 million. In sixth place we find The Lincoln Lawyer, which made $7 million, ahead of the week’s big loser, Sucker Punch, which fell heavily in its second week, down from second to seventh, adding $6 million to a $29.8 million total to date. If the word of mouth keeps up, expect it to fall again next week.
Eighth was Rango, which marshalled $4.5 million, and Paul was ninth with $4.3 million. Battle: Los Angeles, meanwhile, sank to 10th place with $3.5 million. But with more than $100 million in overseas earning and $78.4 million in the US, the producers will be pleased.
