Already in contention for Strangest Title of 2014, David Gordon Green’s latest film, Manglehorn, already boasts Al Pacino as the eponymous character. The cast has now expanded to include Holly Hunter, Harmony Korine and Argo’s Chris Messina.

Pacino is officially signed on as A.J. Manglehorn, a low-key guy in a small town who harbours a dark criminal past. Green told Deadline that it’s “the story of a guy who gave up the love of his life for a life of crime and now he regrets it as the world crumbles in front of him. His profession as a locksmith is symbolic of a guy who’s trying to find the key to put his life back together. It’s a love story, the choices you make in your youth and the situations you set up for yourself: you end up sitting alone at the dinner table talking to a cat! I do think there is a beautiful humour in this.”

There’s no word on exactly who Hunter, Messina and Spring Breakers director Korine will play, but Paul Logan has written the script and Green will be kicking off shooting shortly in Austin, Texas.

Hunter has Diablo Cody’s Paradise awaiting release and will also be seen in one of Terrence Malick’s untitled upcoming projects next year. Green, meanwhile, has been busy: his Nic Cage drama Joe is doing the festival circuit now and he also has Paul Rudd/Emile Hirsch comedy Prince Avalanche set for release here on October 18.
