After a few weeks of Disney/Marvel dominance at the Stateside box office, it took the combined strength of The Rock and The Stath to bash through and claim the crown. All hail our bald overlords, then, as Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw made it to the top spot with a studio-estimated $60.8 million.
That's roughly in line with expectations for the franchise spin-off, which hadn't been predicted to quite hit the heights of the main series. Still, with $180.8 million worldwide on release, it's a good start for the pair and a sign that the Fast universe will continue to spread in new directions, bringing its trademark blend of capital-F family and gravity-ignoring set pieces with it.
The Lion King was pushed to second after three weeks, but still made $38.2 million and has crossed $430 million in the States alone, safely making it into $1 billion territory worldwide this past week. Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood was third, earning $20 million, while Spider-Man: Far From Home added $7.7 million in fourth. At fifth, we find Toy Story 4, which took in $7.1 million.
Yesterday remained in sixth place, showing solid staying power for a film that has now been on release for six weeks, making $2.44 million. Indie superstar The Farewell continued its screen expansion and leapt up a few places to seventh, filling its coffers to the tune of $2.42 million, bringing its US total to $6.8 million. Which might not sound huge, but consider the fact that it's still only playing on around 400 screens compared to the 4,000-plus likes of the big releases.
Alligator horror Crawl sank to eighth via $2.1 million, ahead of Aladdin, which slipped to ninth with $2 million. Finally, at 10th, Annabelle Comes Home earned $875,000.
