German director Oliver Hirschbiegel, who made Downfall (which spawned surely the most popular ‘net movie meme in recent history) and suffered through studio problems with The Invasion, has signed on to tackle an adaptation of Swiss writer Martin Stuter’s novel Die dunkle Seite des Mondes – The Dark Side of the Moon.
Die Hard 4.0 scribe David Marconi has written the script for the movie, which is NOT an adaptation of the Pink Floyd album of the same name and instead will find a successful lawyer indulging in some magic mushrooms and embarking on a trip that makes him realise that his materialistic life is not all it’s cracked up to be. So what does he do? He begins withdrawing from society, of course.
"It's highly unique storytelling and I'm excited that Oliver Hirschbiegel, one of my favourite directors, will direct," producer Karl Spoerri tells Variety.
Hirschbiegel has had better luck in recent years, having just directed Five Minutes in Heaven with Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt starring. He’s about to start work on **Angel Face **with his Das Experiment star Moritz Bleibtreu, which will chronicle the true story of a German mafia hit man.
We’re not sure if anyone will attempt to sync up Pink Floyd’s album with The Wizard of Oz at any point in the new film, though we’ll have to wait a while to find out anyway as it doesn’t kick off shooting around Europe until next Spring.
