Since this year's Comic-Con is now kicking off (be sure to keep checking the site for news, updates, exclusives and interviews), it seems only naturally that Hilary Swank would pick today to announce that she’s producing and starring in an adaptation of comic book/multi-platform project Shrapnel.
Created by sci-fi novelist Nick Sagan and wrier Mark Long, Shrapnel is set in the year 2250 and finds humanity spreading its reach out across the solar system. Most of the colonised planets are under the control of the brutal, domineering Solar Alliance, which maintains an iron-fisted rule on their peoples. But Venus is a free world, where the last bastions of democracy struggle to fight off the Alliance’s encroachment.
Swank will play Samantha “Sam” Vijaya, a former Solar Marine who helps lead an uprising against the oppressive regime. Shades of both Total Recall and Serenity, then…
The title began as a graphic novel trilogy, but, as, seemingly always in this world of cross-promotion and digital tie-ins, has since invaded the iPhone as a game.
There’s no word on a writer or director attached yet.
