As Matt Damon's Mark Watney could attest, missions to Mars are fraught with danger, and sometimes poop-grown spuds. That isn't stopping humanity turning its eye to the Red Planet, both in reality and fiction. The latest screen trip to the place is being led by Hilary Swank in new Netflix series Away, which has a teaser online.

Created by Jessica Goldberg and Andrew Hinderaker (and backed by Friday Night Lights TV drama veteran Jason Katims), Away follows what happens in the near future to a crew who head into space. As American astronaut Emma Green (Hilary Swank) prepares to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars, she must reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband, NASA engineer Matt Logan (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter Alexis (Talitha Bateman) when they need her the most.

As the crew's journey into space intensifies, their personal dynamics and the effects of being away from their loved ones back on Earth become increasingly complex. Away shows that sometimes to reach for the stars, we must leave home behind...

The series, which also features Vivian Wu, Monique Curnen and Mark Ivanir in the cast, will launch on Netflix on 4 September.
