It appears to be a period of change in Henry Cavill’s career. Following his brilliant turn in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and his appointment as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher show, it looks like the actor's time in the DC Extended Universe is coming to an end. According to The Hollywood Reporter{=nofollow}, Cavill is set to end his run (fly?) as Superman on the big screen.

The report claims that Cavill was being approached to make a cameo in Warner Bros’ upcoming DC movie Shazam!, but scheduling conflicts put paid to those plans. The studio was apparently not looking to make a solo Superman film in the immediate future – instead looking towards a Supergirl origin story. Cavill has portrayed Superman in three films – origin story Man Of Steel, followed by superhero team-ups Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and last year’s Justice League. There have been few concrete reports around plans for a Justice League sequel anytime soon.

It seems that the DCEU is moving in a new direction, with Aquaman arriving before the end of 2018. and Shazam! coming early next year. While Gal Gadot is returning as Diana Prince in Wonder Woman 1984 and Ezra Miller is expected to continue his role as The Flash in a solo film shooting next year, rumours have long swirled around Ben Affleck not returning as Bruce Wayne. If Cavill is out, it looks like the two founding pillars of Warner Bros’ DCEU might be leaving crimefighting behind.

Reached for comment, Warner Bros. made the following statement: "We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged. Additionally we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films." Take from that what you will...
