When Helen Mirren gets into biopic mode, she’s always one to watch (see: her performance as the Queen, in, er, The Queen). And for her next project, she’s joined Guy Nattiv’s historical biopic Golda, as Israel’s first female Prime Minister Golda Meir – and the first image of her in character has just been released, which you can see above.
“Golda Meir was a formidable, intransigent and powerful leader,” Mirren said in a statement. “It is a great challenge to portray her at the most difficult moment of her extraordinary life. I only hope I do her justice!”
Nattiv previously helmed the Jamie Bell-starring Skin in 2018, and for Golda he’s shooting a script by Florence Foster Jenkins scribe Nicholas Martin. The film is described as a “ticking-clock thriller – sharing the intensely dramatic events, high-stake responsibilities, and controversial decisions that Meir – also known as the ‘Iron Lady of Israel’ – faced during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Her actions, in impossible circumstances, would ultimately decide the fate of millions of lives.” Also newly-announced to star is Call My Agent’s Camille Cottin.
With production on the film now underway, expect this one to arrive in the next year or two.
