Empire issue 241 (with the Public Enemies cover - you remember, you bought it, didn't you?) contained a giant interview with Winona Ryder, who at the time seemed clear that a Heathers sequel was percolating.
"Whatever you hear, [it] is in the works, I swear!" said Nona. "There is a story, and Christian [Slater] has agreed to come back as a kind of Obi-Wan character. For some reason Dan [Waters, writer], and Michael [Lehmann, director] don't want to talk about it."
All news to Michael Lehmann, who seems perfectly happy to talk about it in an interview with Movieline.
"Winona brings it up every once in a while and Dan Waters and I will joke about it, but as far as I know there’s no script and no plans to do the sequel," says the director, who spoke to Waters and discovered he doesn't know anything either. "I never thought it made sense to see a sequel to a movie which took place in a specific time and specific place and in which many of the characters got killed off."
So there you have it. There are plenty of mooted eighties revivals in various stages of development, but Heathers, aparently, is not among them. Are we sad or relieved?
