Highlanders 6, 7 and 8?

Can anyone remember when Highlander was good? Anyone? No? Well take our word for it, once upon a time that was the case. In 1986 the first film blew people away. Sure it had a dodgy Queen soundtrack and more than its fair share of laughable accents but it was nonetheless a thrilling tale of derring-do and swashbuckling through the centuries with the odd decapitation thrown in for good measure. The sequel, however, was a disastrous extrapolation of the story which everyone chose to ignore. A sub-par threequel enlisted Mario Van Peebles and the fourth instalment (based on the surprisingly popular and long-running TV series spin-off) went straight to video. Now we've already bemoaned the madness that lead to greenlighting part five, Highlander: The Source but, according to a source close to the production, a further three films may yet find release. Peter Wingfield (who played Methos in the TV series) told Hollywood North Report that Highlander 6 is on the production slate with a pair of further episodes waiting in the wings. "They're in negotiations with Miramax for at least another movie," he said. "I believe they're trying to sell the idea of a trilogy, somewhat akin to the Lord of the Rings. Each movie would be complete in its own right but there would be an overall story across the board." But why, God? WHY? "It has something in common with Star Trek in that it's about the search of something more than just ourselves," mused Wingfield. "just simple humanity. There's something else out there bigger than us. The search for deeper truths. Truths that spans not just our species but are eternal truths from species to species and planet to planet. It's a spirituality that is in need for some deep personal fulfilment akin to religion, that sparks in its fans." Has he been watching the same movies? Thanks to ComingSoon.
