Not content with being a favourite component in the MCU, Hayley Atwell has accepted a new assignment: she'll be part of (at least) the next Mission: Impossible film.

Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie broke the news via his Instagram account (see his post below), sending Atwell a message (yes, one assumes all the deals had already been done and this is just some fun PR, but don't deny the duo their fun). Atwell responded with her own series of posts that played upon the image that McQuarrie posted, though she added, "I’m not the sort to follow orders..."

As with most of the elements for the next two movies (and we don't yet know if she'll be in both, but we can hope) that McQuarrie is preparing to shoot back to back, we don't know for sure what her role will be. Tom Cruise is naturally be returning as Ethan Hunt and we can expect the usual expansive, dangerous set pieces. And we'd be truly shocked if the current M:I regulars – Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson – aren't back for the madness.

The next Mission is due on 2021, followed by the other in 2022. Atwell is part of the cast for Netflix's country-spanning new series Criminal, hitting the streaming service on 20 September. Plus, she's voicing Peggy Carter again for the Marvel Disney+ animated series What If...?, which is due to arrive in Summer 2021. Read more about it here.
