Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen's is one of the all-time great Hollywood bromances. As Star Wars' Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the duo have fought alongside one another, with one another, and given fans some of the most iconic moments in modern cinema. It's not without good reason that Christensen and McGregor's on-screen reunion in 2022's Obi-Wan Kenobi series — and the recent, long overdue cultural reappraisal of the Prequel Trilogy — has triggered a swell of warm and fuzzies across the galaxy. And yesterday, as McGregor — whose illustrious filmography also includes Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, and Doctor Sleep among many others — took his well-earned place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame surrounded by friends and family, Christensen was right there leading the tributes to his co-star and close friend.
During a poignant speech, Christensen recalled being given "the biggest hug" by McGregor when they first met on the set of Attack Of The Clones, and knowing instantly that they would go on to share a special bond. "He was just beyond kind to me, and it was immediately apparent to me that I was meeting someone truly special, Christensen said, "not just as an actor, but as a person, and that I was meeting a friend." In a playful reference to Revenge Of The Sith's dramatic duel on Mustafar, the Ahsoka actor also added, "A friend who would later go on to chop off both my legs and leave me for dead on the side of a volcano, but I guess I kind of had that coming."
Elsewhere, Christensen also took the time to pay tribute to McGregor's work as Obi-Wan Kenobi across the past quarter of a century. "To watch him embody this character, it's like watching magic," enthused Christensen. "And the best kind of magic — not the kind that involves any like trickery or sleight of hand, but the kind that really makes you believe in something bigger. Because he wasn't just playing Obi-Wan, he was Obi-Wan. I mean, he is Obi Wan. And I really hope we get more Obi-Wan, because this man is just Star Wars gold." (Note, just in case Kathleen Kennedy is reading: we hope we get more Obi-Wan too — and renew The Acolyte please and thank you.)
In wrapping up his speech, Christensen drove home the respect and admiration he harbours for the man who's shared his journey to that galaxy far, far away. "So, my friend Ewan, I want to thank you for being the best Jedi Master that anyone could have ever hoped for," Christensen said. "You always had my back and I thank you for that. I'm just so happy to get to be here with you right now. It's been an honor and a thrill to get to work with you, and swing a lightsaber with you, and more than all of it, call you my friend. I love you, brother." And do you know what? We love these guys, too.
