Looks like playing Colonel Dolarhyde in Cowboys & Aliens has given Harrison Ford the bug to keep saddling up and slapping on a hat, so he’s signed to play Wyatt Earp in Black Hats.
This one, though, will likely feature a lot less riding and a lot more scowling. Hats will be adapted from Road to Perdition source material writer Max Allan Collins’ novel, which merges fact and fiction for a story of an older Earp, who worked as a private eye and film consultant in LA. That part is true. The invented element will see him discovering that old mucker Doc Holliday had a son, died in New York and now the lad is in trouble with Al Capone.
So, naturally figuring that he has to help him out, Earp recruits former deputy Bat Masterson – who is now a noted sports writer – to take on Capone’s gang in a battle of Tommy guns versus six-shooters.
Kurt Johnstad, who worked with Zack Snyder on 300, is scribbling the sequel Battle of Artemisia and was recently hired to help polish the Man of Steel script, will work from the book, which Collins wrote under a pseudonym in 2007. There’s no word on a director yet, but Harrison Ford battling gangsters? We’ll take that!
