Kal Penn, after spending a year working at the White House as Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement* is set to return to our screens in a third Harold & Kumar movie, tentatively titled A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas. John Cho will, of course, be stepping off the bridge of the Enterprise to join him, which is such good news that stoners everywhere will be giggling uncontrollably in excitement (at least, we assume that's why they're giggling).

There's no word on a plot yet, but we can only assume that it involves a)weed; b) the munchies; c) an ill-fated road trip; d)improbably hot women and d)Neil Patrick Harris in some form (while shot in the back in the last movie, a post-credits sting showed that he survived. Hooray!).

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg have written the previous two films and directed the last one, and were already announced as writers and directors this time - although Deadline New York are reporting that New Line is "about to hire" a director, so it's possible that has changed. The film is due to shoot this summer after Penn completes his work at the White House (he only signed up for a year), for release either Christmas 2011 or 2012. Why is it set to take so long? Well, possibly because they're considering a 3D release; possibly because everyone involved is planning an ill-fated road trip of their own before they finish editing.

*And try fitting that on a business card.
