Listen up, Sand-heads. The Adam Sandler sequel you’ve long long long been waiting for is finally on the way. (No, not The Wedding Singer 2.) For years now, the comedy icon has had a fruitful partnership with Netflix, delivering fresh comedies (the Murder Mystery movies, Hubie Halloween) and more serious fare from the star (Hustle, Spaceman). Now, the streaming service is responsible for finally delivering Happy Gilmore 2 – following up Sandler’s beloved 1996 sports comedy, in which the titular character swaps ice hockey for golf, and becomes something of a sporting legend. The first teaser is here, not only confirming the film’s release date, but giving fans the first proper look at Gilmore back on the green. Watch it here:
The vibes of this one are pure cosiness – letting those who love Gilmore’s antics bask in the glory of seeing him back in action, while also delivering some familiar faces. Christopher McDonald is back as Gilmore’s golfing nemesis Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen returns as his beau Virginia – and yes, Ben Stiller is back too as Hal. He’s not glimpsed here, as far as we can tell, but we also know that one of Sandler’s Uncut Gems directors, Benny Safdie, is also among the cast. This is how we win. The film comes from director Kyle Newacheck, who directed the first Murder Mystery, and helmed multiple episodes of What We Do In The Shadows. The script comes from Sandler and Tim Herlihy, who previously wrote the original together, among many other Sandler hits.
This is just a teaser for now, but Netflix is preparing Happy Gilmore 2 for a big summer launch – with a confirmed release date of 25 July. Start practicing your golf swings now, people.
