Sluggish. That’s the best way to describe this past weekend’s lacklustre showing at the US box office. It didn’t help that there were slim pickings on offer, but in the end Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters emerging victorious at the top of the charts with $19 million.
Horror pic Mama slipped down one place to second, earning $12.8 million, while Silver Linings Playbook maintained its momentum and sat in third with $10 million. That put it ahead of Zero Dark Thirty, which fell from second to fourth, earning $9.8 million. But even that was enough to best one of the other new arrivals, Jason Statham’s latest action offering Parker, which took in $7 million for fifth.
Django Unchained actually went up one place to sixth and $5.5 million, while taking its place in seventh was the abysmally reviewed star-laden comedy anthology Movie 43. That could only muster up $5 million. Gangster Squad was down to eighth with $4.2 million, while Broken City fell to ninth and $4 million. Finally, Les Miserables dropped to 10th place, earning $3.9 million.
