Like discovering Bill Bailey was the performer on stage before you, following up The Hurt Locker was always going to be a tricky proposition, which might explain why Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal have been taking such care and attention developing their next project, formerly titled Triple Frontier and currently working under the name Sleeping Dogs. But they’re moving forward now, and Tom Hanks is circling one of the main roles.

According to the Heat Vision blog, the actor has yet to lock in a deal, and the part he’d play is unspecified, since the plot of the movie (which may yet undergo several more name changes before it hits the screen) is being kept fairly quiet at this stage.

But what we do know is that the story’s set in the border zone between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil (hence the original title), and is focused on five different men working in the area, which is swarming with organised crime.

Naturally, given the kudos (and the Oscars) Bigelow and Boal won for their last film, some heavy hitters have been associated with the movie as the pair worked on the script, with the likes of Sean Penn, Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio all rumoured to have some involvement at different times.

We’re sure more big names will join up, particularly if Hanks signs on, but we’d be happy to watch the Locker team work with a bunch of complete unknowns if it meant we got something as good as that again.
