Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton

It’s fair to say that Lin-Manuel Miranda is a busy guy. Mary Poppins Returns is coming out near Christmas; he’s set to direct his first film in Tick, Tick… Boom; he’s starring in the BBC’s His Dark Materials; he’s producing The Kingkiller Chronicles and Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of his musical In The Heights. Oh, and he still has a little show called Hamilton playing to a couple of thousand punters a night across the world.

With his founding fathers hip-hop musical still packing in audiences in droves, a film adaptation is likely to be several years away – but a filmed version of the stage show starring the original Broadway cast is currently engaged in a bidding war between the studios. The performance was filmed back in 2016, and according to the Wall Street Journal, Hollywood film execs are not throwing away their shot when it comes to securing the rights to it, which are expected to sell for up to $50 million.

When the rights do get picked up, there'll still be a wait for Hamilton to make it to the big screen – the sellers are reportedly requesting that screenings are delayed until at least 2020 or 2021, extending the time where the show can only be seen on stage. Whenever it does arrive, it will give non-US fans the chance to see the likes of Miranda, Daveed Diggs, Anthony Ramos, Leslie Odom Jr., Christopher Jackson, Phillipa Son and Renée Elise Goldberry performing the show. And you can be sure they’re willing to wait for it.
