He spent nearly two years playing dual roles in musical sensation Hamilton, so it seems fitting that Anthony Ramos has just landed two very different movie parts at once. He'll appear in both Bradley Cooper's new take on A Star Is Born and creature feature sequel Godzilla: King Of The Monsters.
Let's start with Star, shall we? This latest remake of the 1937 original finds Cooper as Jackson Maine, a country music star who is on the brink of decline when he discovers a talented unknown named Ally (Lady Gaga, working under her own name, Stefani Germanotta). As the two begin a passionate love affair, Jack coaxes Ally into the spotlight, catapulting her to stardom. But as Ally’s career quickly eclipses his own, Jack finds it increasingly hard to handle his fading glory. Cooper is directing from a script by Eric Roth and Ramos is playing Ramon, Ally's best friend and a dancer who is a natural in the spotlight.
That one feels like it's directly in Ramos' performing wheelhouse, but the Godzilla sequel should push him a little further out of his usual territory. Michael Dougherty is preparing to make the new monster movie, with Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Aisha Hinds, O'Shea Jackson Jr. and a returning Ken Watanabe in the follow-up to the 2014 film. Not much has been released about the story (beyond the obvious promise of big beasts battling), but Deadline has learned that Ramos will be Corporal Mendoza, calm under fire and one of the bravest soldiers around. The film will be out on 22 March 2019.
Before either movie hits, Ramos will be seen as Mars Blackmon in Spike Lee's TV adaptation of She's Gotta Have It, which will arrive on Netflix this year.
