The rumour mill is grinding busily with various stories of developing horror sequels, so given that some of the following information is at best slight and at worst dubious, we thought we'd gather it all into a single place. Read on if you care to know what might be happening in the worlds of Halloween, Evil Dead and Brightburn.
Starting in Haddonfield, BD has an odd-sounding Halloween scoop from a supposedly reliable inside source. According to this report, director David Gordon Green is returning to continue the story from last year's Blumhouse reboot. So far so not so surprising, until we get to the suggestion that we're looking at two sequels shooting back-to-back, and that both will be released in the same month: October next year.
It seems highly unlikely, but it's also just plausible, given the Blumhouse predilection for low-outlay, high-yield projects with splashy publicity. It certainly wouldn't get much splashier than a never-before-attempted two-sequels-within-weeks scenario. And with Halloween 2018 effortlessly sailing to a quarter-of-a-billion dollars at the worldwide box office, making franchise hay while the sun shines does make a sort of sense. So file that under "Probably Not", but also under "Hmmmm".
Also under BD's umbrella comes the "news" that Sam Raimi is still not done with Evil Dead. Now, Raimi has been saying this for decades. He said it often in the 25 years between Army Of Darkness and the TV reboot Ash Vs Evil Dead, for example. But then, Ash Vs Evil Dead did eventually happen...
The series was cancelled after three seasons last year, with star Bruce Campbell saying he was now officially retiring Ash and bidding him a fond final farewell. What Raimi is now saying is that he's got a few ideas for how future Evil Dead chapters could play out in different scenarios.
“I would be thrilled if Bruce changed his mind about retirement and would come back for the original Evil Dead line,” says the director. "Bruce, Rob Tapert (producer) and myself are talking about one or two different ways to go for the next movie..." But if Campbell does ultimately decline, Raimi is also up for a sequel to the 2013 remake as long as Fede Álvarez is involved. And if that doesn't work either, he even says there's an unspecified third way that the deadites and the Necronomicon might be back. More as we learn it, probably in 2044.
And finally, in response to a fan question on Instagram, James Gunn has said he's more than interested in further instalments to his recent super-horror Brightburn, but that they certainly won't happen for a while. "We're talking about the sequel," he says, "but I think I'm tied up for the next few years with The Suicide Squad and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3..."
