Jake Gyllenhaal is heading to the moon with director Doug Liman (Mr and Mrs Smith). The movie is still without a title, but the story centres on a "private' expedition to the moon – which we're assuming means this is set in a time when lunar travel is readily open to the public and members of N'Sync – and a race to colonise said sattelite. The screenplay was originally written by Liman and John Hamburg, but Mark Bowden (Black Hawk Down) is doing a re-write.
This marks another genre checked off the list for Liman. He's already covered indie comedy (Swingers), teen (Go), action (The Bourne Identity), rom-com (Mr and Mrs Smith) and superhero, with Jumper, a movie he's putting the final touches on as we speak.
Liman's always plagued by rumours of troubled shoots, something he says is down to his refusal to compromise and a desire to try new things to get something original. But, since the end result almost always turns out to be great – though we know some (wrong) people think little of Mr and Mrs Smith – trouble seems to love him. This sounds like the most ambitious thing he's attempted, so consider us excited.
