Guillermo Del Toro at the Crimson Peak premiere

Despite always having several irons in the creative fire, Guillermo del Toro has never had trouble focusing on one when a studio bites on a project. And he's busy gearing up for his next, an untitled Cold War drama that now has Sally Hawkins aboard to star and Octavia Spencer in talks.

The director – who has written and will also produce this new project for Fox Searchlight – hasn't revealed much in the way of details. But we do know that in true GDT style, it'll blend something otherworldly with a love story set against the backdrop of 1960s America.

We can expect magic and mystery, and of course some amazing design work all fuelled by del Toro's typical passion for such stories. Plus, with Hawkins and potentially Spencer in front of the camera, you know the acting will be top notch.

Hawkins will be seen in the next series of The Hollow Crown and has worked on indie biopic Maudie. Spencer is part of the cast for The Divergent Series: Allegiant, which is in UK cinemas now. And she has a voice role in Disney's Zootropolis, arriving next week.
