After a quiet-ish year following the break-out Oscar success of The Shape Of Water, Guillermo Del Toro is racking up the projects again. Currently hard at work on his stop-motion Pinocchio for Netflix, he's also, as ever, overseeing a number of other projects in a Producer capacity. The latest of those has just been revealed as an English-language remake of the 2017 Argentinian horror Aterrados (AKA Terrified). The original's director Demián Rugna will return to helm the new version, from a screenplay by Sacha Gervasi.
Aterrados has been a firm horror festival favourite over the last year or so, picking up a number of awards nominations (and indeed wins). The story revolves around three paranormal investigators, tasked by a local Commisioner with explaining some disturbing events that have recently taken place in a street in Gran Buenos Aires. Empire's Kim Newman praised its "sickly, unsettling look and impressive, aggressive manifestations" in his FrightFest review.
Gervasi previously wrote The Terminal and Hitchcock, was behind the brilliant documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil and most recently wrote and directed HBO’s My Dinner with Herve.
Terrified is coming together at Fox Searchlight, where Del Toro scored a major deal last April. "For the longest time, I’ve hoped to find an environment in which I can distribute, nurture and produce new voices in smart, inventive genre films and channel my own," he said in a statement. "In Fox Searchlight, I’ve found a real home for live action production — a partnership based on hard work, understanding of each other and, above all, faith. After the wonderful experience I had with Fox Searchlight on The Shape of Water I am honored to have the opportunity to continue the relationship."
