Guillermo del Toro's ten-storeys-tall-tale of big robots and even bigger monsters wasn't the biggest hit of the summer - that garland goes to Iron Man 3, with $1.2 billion in the kitty - but with $400 million worldwide, GDT's Kaiju caper was a relative success in a sea of sequels. So if you're wondering whether you will see a follow-up in the form of Pacific Rim 2, know this: Del Toro's already writing it.
Speaking to IGN about the original film's Blu-ray release (and much more besides), the Hellboy director had this to say on the topic: "We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate."
Beacham is the same man who came up with the idea behind the film in the first place, working on a number of drafts with Del Toro, so this means there would be no new blood in the writers' room this time around. How they'll make the threat even bigger than it was before remains to be seen, but it's fascinating to know that plans are afoot even now to take us back to the world of jaegers and their jaegermeisters. Now it's your job to let Warners and Legendary know you want more...
Pacific Rim is out on Blu-ray and DVD in the UK on November 11.
