Months after he was ousted from the Marvel Cinematic Universe over historic offensive joke tweets, James Gunn is back in as the director of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. According to Deadline, the filmmaker is back at the helm after several meetings with Disney president Alan Horn, using the script that he handed in prior to his dismissal.

According to Deadline, the meetings focused on Gunn's reaction to the initial dismissal – unlike in other recent scandals, he's been contrite and upfront about the issue and never lashed back at Disney for the move. He made a public apology and today has used his Twitter feed to express his gratitude for the change in status.

James Gunn twitter statement on Guardians return

While Gunn was announced as the director of The Suicide Squad, a sequel-reboot of DC’s anti-hero movie – it appears he’ll still be making that film first, before returning to Marvel to make Guardians Vol. 3. The next Guardians movie will fall into Phase 4 of the MCU, and will likely be set prior to the events of Infinity War and Endgame, just as Guardians Vol. 2 was set directly after the original. The exact details have yet to be released, however.
