Recently, a lot of the buzz (pardon the pun) on **The Green Hornet **has been somewhat negative, with word that Sony was unhappy with the film. Now the studio has announced that the film is being shifted from a December release to January. Why? So it can be given a 3D makeover.
Sony announced yesterday that the film will get the 3D treatment, albeit at a higher level than the much-criticised conversion job than was performed by Warners on Clash Of The Titans.
Since director Michel Gondry and star/writer/producer Seth Rogen have yet to start editing the film, and none of the visual effects have been put in place, the 3D process can happen a lot more naturally than taking a finished movie and painting over it in green and red (that’s how they did it on Clash, right?)
"He always kind of shot it having the possibility of having it in 3D in mind," Sony’s Rory Bruer said of Gondry in a statement. "It's got a lot of depth and amazing visuals." And the move isn't necessarily a danger sign: it's smart, given that Tron Legacy and the Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows will both be dominating 3D screens by December.
Drew McWeeny at HitFix got on the blower to Rogen himself, who waxed enthusiastic about the idea. "Evan Goldberg, Michel Gondry and myself could not be more excited about going 3D. The truth is that this is something that we have wanted since the very first conversations we all had about the film. A lot of the visually driven sequences Michel came up were first conceived for a 3D movie. What gets me most excited is the fact that Gondry is so enthusastic about it. I think that Gondry's visuals done in 3D will give us something we've never seen before."
In order to accommodate the move, Priest, the vampire action thriller starring Paul Bettany, will be shoved back into March. Hornet, which was due to arrive here on December 29, will likely now show up either mid-late January or some time in February.
In related dimensionalisation news, Ain't It Cool has learned that M Night Shyamalan's adapted-from-anime adventure The Last Airbender will also be getting the 3D treatment. That one, however, won't have to change its release date as the director has apparently been mulling the idea for months and, after being convinced by recent tests, has thrown the switch on the process.
