The name Farrelly has long been associated with gross-out humour, from There’s Something About Mary to Dumb And Dumber. But for Peter Farrelly’s latest film as director, Green Book, he’s chucked the yuks. His new film is a biographical drama about an Italian-American bouncer (Viggo Mortensen) who becomes the driver for African-American pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) on a tour round the southern states in the 1960s. Empire has an exclusive image, as seen in the Review of the Year issue.
While it’s a shift to more serious territory, Farrelly’s comedy instincts shines through – milking plenty of laughs from the interactions between Mortensen and Ali. “I didn’t expect the outright laughs that we’re getting,” the filmmaker admitted to Empire. “That’s coming from the acting. Mahershala’s reaction to what Viggo’s doing is what’s killing.”
