The obsession with prequels continues. Just when you thought there were no mysteries to be unravelled left in film stories, along comes Paramount to dissuade you of that notion, with plans to make a Grease prequel called Summer Loving.
Paramount's Players division has thrown the concept, birthed from the dueling stories of summer romance told by John Travolta's Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton-John's Sandy Olssen in the song 'Summer Nights', into development.
Big Fish's John August is the man tasked with turning that summer fling into a film that will likely explore the story from both angles. Could this be Rashomon, but for romance? It's a tricky road to walk, as we already know the major points of the story and no one is quite sure whether we need all the details filled in.
Still, Paramount thinks the continued popularity of the 1978 movie means there should be an audience for the prequel, so we'll see...
