The Oscar Nominations were announced in Los Angeles on Thursday morning local time and, that evening in the city, the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards 2014 were handed out. They are sometimes seen as a decent indicator of the Academy Awards results, and if that in any way holds true, it should be a good Oscar night for 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle and Gravity, which each won several gongs.
12 Years took home Best Picture (though the Critics’ ceremony has several slight fudges on several categories, with action awards and the like, which led to** American Hustle** scoring Best Comedy), Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o and Best Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley.
But Gravity won the biggest haul, striding off with Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Actress In An Action Movie for Sandra Bullock, Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie, and Best Score. American Hustle added Best Acting Ensemble, Best Actress In A Comedy (Amy Adams), and awards for hair and makeup to its Comedy gong.
Spike Jonze’s script for Her was handed Best Original Screenplay, while there were expected wins for Cate Blanchett in Best Actress for** Blue Jasmine**, and Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for Dallas Buyers Club.
