We’re all in need of a getaway right now – a couple of months into the latest lockdown, and with summer on the horizon but not quite here yet. Since few of us have left the country for the past year, it’s movies and TV series that are providing our escapism – and the first trailer for British film Granada Nights is perfectly primed to whisk you off to Spain for a heady, transformative summer of partying, drinking, walks in the sunshine, and ice cream sundaes. It’s the tale of young Brit tourist Ben, lingering in Europe after a brutal break-up, only to find community with a group of international students in the southern Spanish city. Watch the trailer exclusively here:
The film is the directorial debut of British-Pakistani writer-director Abid Khan, drawn from his own experiences in Granada after having had his heart broken. "One late summer in 2006, after an intense breakup, I took a last minute sabbatical to Granada, Spain to study Spanish for a month,” he says. “As I walked through the ancient streets that held a thousand stories, I was mesmerised and in awe of the magical city and Andalusian culture. But it was the friendships with other young foreigners that kept me there for a year and had profound effect on my life. Ever since I have been obsessed with capturing the magic of this city and the fleetness of youth.”
Starring in the film is Antonio Aakeel as Ben – previously seen in Tomb Raider, Eaten By Lions, and Dublin Murders – along with Quintessa Swindell, soon to be seen in Neil Burger’s Voyagers and DC Comics movie Black Adam. Catch Granada Nights in UK cinemas – all things going well – from 28 May.
