Training Day director tries on The Jacket

He may not be an instantly recognisable name yet, but take it from us, Antoine Fuqua’s one nifty young director to watch. After showing quite a knack for transforming even the most unpromising material into Oscar-winning gold in last year’s Training Day, the music-vid turned feature film whizz has hit the big league. And the good news is that he might have just found the material to match his mettle. Whereas you wouldn’t have been surprised to see Training Day’s basic plot played out in some cruddy Channel 5 effort, Fuqua’s new film, The Jacket has an intriguing and unusual enough storyline to make you fairly bounce around in anticipation. The drama will follow a falsely imprisoned man who learns – rather cleverly, we may say – to see into the future and does his damndest to try to change his fate. Well, you would, wouldn’t you For this mouth-watering project, the lucky man has also attracted the support of Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney who know talent when they see it; recent fortunate blighters who’ve benefited from their backing include Britain’s very own Christopher Nolan, who found the powerful duo invaluable in helping him to land Insomnia. And The Jacket’s not the only film Fuqua’s got lined up. The busy fella has just finished military drama Tears of the Sun with Bruce Willis and has no less than three other big features in the piepline. Watch this face.
