Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ new planned stab at Godzilla already has a director in place in the shape of Monsters’ Gareth Edwards, and David Callahan had written the first draft of the script. Now there appears to have been a change in that department, as regular Chris Nolan contributor and fellow filmmaker David S Goyer has been hired to take on the writing gig.
Goyer, who has worked on all of Nolan’s Batman films and crafted the script for Superman reboot Man of Steel, will be working from Callahan’s draft on a new version of the Godzilla screenplay.
This doesn’t mean that any new information has oozed out about what the angle might be, though surely Godzilla is not that difficult to screw up? Pit giant monsters against one another, watch them fight and provide a city or two for them to stomp. That said, if you tinker too much and don’t get it right, you can really fall flat on your face. Just ask Roland Emmerich…
Still, while his own movies have not exactly been much to write home about, Goyer’s work with Nolan and co has been solid, so we’re hoping that the combination of his scripting with Gareth Edwards’ guidance will end up birthing something solid. And large. And reptilian. Assuming the studio doesn’t bring in 15 other writers between now and the as-yet-undecided release date...
