X-Men spin-off Gambit might have Channing Tatum still attached to play the titular mutant, but the movie just cannot hang on to a director. Gore Verbinski is the latest filmmaker to step away.
There is as yet, no word on why Verbinski chose to leave the film, though it was apparently a mutual decision. More surprising is the timing – with pre-production and casing already under way (Lizzy Caplan was reportedly aboard to star alongside Tatum), and a shoot pencilled in to kick off in March, the fact that Verbinski is leaving now raises eyebrows.
20th Century Fox has been aiming to still meet a 14 February, 2019 release date, but has since bowed to the challenges and moved The New Mutants back a whole ten months from this coming April to that slot. Gambit is now taking aim at a 7 June, 2019 release, while Deadpool 2 has shifted to 18 May this year.
Verbinski represents just the latest name to depart, following in the footsteps of Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman.
