He’s been pinging the rumour radar for a while now, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt is finally officially on board Chris Nolan’s third (and likely final) Bat-outing, The Dark Knight Rises. And not only has his involvement been confirmed, but it appears that his character has also leaked, with Variety reporting him as Alberto Falcone.
If the surname sounds familiar, that’s because he’s the son of Mafia boss Carmine, as played by Tom Wilkinson back in Batman Begins. If it pans out, it would offer a nice sense of synchronicity and closure for Nolan’s adventures in Gotham City. The character cropped up in The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory and is psychopathic serial murderer The Holiday Killer, who picks off criminals linked to his father.
Naturally, Nolan may just pick and choose what elements he uses from Alberto’s story, but he’s a solid fit for the more realistic world that the director has crafted for Bruce Wayne and co.
Gordon-Levitt’s casting is hardly a surprise given that Nolan has already recruited at least one of his Inception team, with Tom Hardy aboard to play fellow villain Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle and Bat-regulars Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman.
Another possible new addition is Juno Temple, who the trade mag is apparently being considered for the role of a street-smart Gotham girl. Expect an official announcement as soon as Nolan makes a decision (or decides to release information about the choice)…
