Though the fervour about Pokemon Go appears to be dropping off sharply, the next Pokemon film is still happening, under the auspices of Legendary Entertainment and The Pokemon Company. And now we know who will be tasked with bringing Detective Pokemon to our screens: director Rob Letterman.

The project is still planned as a live-action project (with Pikachu brought to life though CG, naturally), and has a script from Guardians Of The Galaxy's Nicole Perlman and Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch. Their experience bringing vivid characters to life should hold them in good stead and Letterman has plenty of experience in both the animation world and movies where CG characters interact with humans.

As for the story? Nobody knows yet – though the iteration of the little yellow character debuted in a Japanese video game, the movie's plot remains under wraps. But we wouldn't expect a cross between Pokemon and True Detective... Unless that's the plan. We'd watch that. The movie should be shooting next year.

The Pokemon movie is Detective Pikachu
