In a time where the reputation of the Golden Globes and its controlling organisation, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, have taken some serious hits about its lack of diversity and other issues, the awards ceremony was less a glittering celebration of Hollywood and more an attempt at damage control, with lots of talk of charity work. The show was neither televised nor live-streamed and no celebrities showed up to present or collect their awards which were held as a members' dinner and announced via social media. Among the big film winners? The Power Of The Dog, Belfast and West Side Story.
The Power Of The Dog, Jane Campion's latest film, took Best Director, Best Picture – Drama and Best Supporting Actor (Any Film) for Kodi Smit-McPhee. Star Benedict Cumberbatch was pipped to Best Actor – Drama by King Richard's Will Smith. Nicole Kidman got Best Actress – Drama for Being The Ricardos.
On the Musical/Comedy side of things, West Side Story was named Best Picture, while Rachel Zegler was named Best Actress and co-star Ariana DeBose took Best Supporting Actress (Any Film). Tick, Tick... Boom!'s Andrew Garfield won Best Actor.
Encanto scored Best Animated Movie, Belfast took Best Screenplay and Drive My Car was awarded Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language.
Music-wise, Hans Zimmer's work on Dune took Best Original Score and No Time To Die's title theme, from Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, nabbed Best Original Song.
