With the rise of streaming services, regular network TV in the States - never much of a favourite with Hollywood Foreign Press Association voters – has been pretty much shut out in the small screen nominations for this year's Golden Globes. With nods for The Crown, Chernobyl,The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and more, streamers and pay cable channels across the pond dominated.
The Crown showed that the transition between casts wasn't going to hurt its awards chances, as the likes of Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies and the show's third series all scored nominations. Netflix as a whole did very well thanks to the royal drama, rape crime series Unbelievable, Russian Doll, The Kominsky Method, The Politician and Living With Yourself (the power of Paul Rudd is strong). A big disappointment was the lack of any love for Ava DuVernay's When They See Us.
HBO had little reason to complain, scoring nods for Chernobyl, Big Little Lies, Barry and Succession. Oh, and a little show called Game Of Thrones was all but forgotten outside of an acting nomination for Kit Harington. The biggest surprise was the lack of any consideration for Watchmen. No well-deserved shot for Regina King?
Beyond the big two, Apple has cracked the Globes on its first try, though given the star-heaving offering that is The Morning Show, that's not a shock. It's
Globes-nip. Showtime scored more surprising nominations for The Loudest Voice, which got middling reviews, while Hulu is in contention with The Act and Ramy.
Finally, the ultimate insult: nothing in any category for The Mandalorian breakout star Baby [Redacted For Spoilers]? Staggering. For the film list, head here.
