Truly kicking off awards season as unpredictably as ever, the 77th Golden Globes saw the Hollywood Foreign Press Association let Martin Scorsese go home with no awards for The Irishman despite its five nominations. But it was a successful night for Sam Mendes, who won both Best Director and Best Motion Picture (Drama) for his personal World War I film 1917.
Renée Zellweger and Joaquin Phoenix secured awards for Best Actress and Best Actor in a Drama respectively, for powerhouse, full-body transformative performances in Judy and Joker – sometimes the safest options are simply the right ones.
Taron Egerton rose above Eddie Murphy's comeback, Daniel Craig's southern twang, Leonardo DiCaprio's ode to old Hollywood and Roman Griffin Davis' age of 12 years old, as he won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy as Elton John in Rocketman – could this secure his Oscar chances, even in the year following the triumph of Bohemian Rhapsody?
It was a good night for Quentin Tarantino too, as the director enjoyed wins for Best Screenplay, Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Brad Pitt won Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.
Ricky Gervais returned to host the ceremony for the fifth (and he promises, final) time, leaving transitions quick and sharp, and the jokes suitably scathing. A few welcome surprises peppered the evening, as The Farewell's Awkwafina won Best Actress in a Comedy and Missing Link gave Laika a win over Pixar in the animation category.
This leaves both major Netflix awards vehicles Marriage Story and The Irishman without so much to show for – but the Oscars are still a few weeks away, so it could all still change.
