Golden Globe Nominations Announced

And Babel leads with 7 nominations

Golden Globe Nominations Announced

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees today for the 64th Golden Globes, one of the biggest and glitziest celebrations in the run-up to the Oscars. And, partly thanks to the multitudinous categories at the Globes and partly thanks to the wide-open nature of the awards race this year, it’s still anyone’s game. Still, Babel is the most popular nominee with seven nominations, presumably putting it in front in the Best Picture – Drama race.

**The Departed **just trailed Babel with six nominations, while Dreamgirls unsurprisingly dominated the Comedy/Musical categories with five. Other notable nominations include three nods for Helen Mirren, nominated once for The Queen and twice for her TV work, in Elizabeth I and Prime Suspect. Clint Eastwood picked up twin nominations for his twin films Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima (if he wins it will be for Jima, we think, but the two might split the vote) and Leonardo DiCaprio also gets two nods for Blood Diamond and **The Departed **(but Matt Damon is cruelly snubbed for his underrated turn). The other multiple nominee is Toni Collette, nominated as Best Supporting Actress for Little Miss Sunshine and for her turn in TV’s Tsunami: The Aftermath. In the more "out there" category is Chewitel Ejiofor's nod for Kinky Boots, to place alongside another nod for his excellent performance in TV movie Tsunami: The Aftermath.

Strangely, two American films appear in the Best Foreign Picture category, as Apocalypto and Letters from Iwo Jima were knocked out of contention for Best Picture due to the language in which they were shot, and in with the foreigners, which also included Pan’s Labyrinth and Volver. Also on the “Things To Cheer About” list is the news that Sacha Baron Cohen got a nomination for acting for Borat, and the news that Monster House is up for Best Animated Film alongside Cars and probable winner Happy Feet (never bet against the penguins). Otherwise this is very much the list you’d expect two months away from the Oscars, dominated by those already favoured by the perceived wisdom. Check out the full list and see what you think below.
