Despite some bumps along the way (we’re mostly looking at you, Godzilla: King Of The Monsters), Legendary’s MonsterVerse has – by and large – been a well-received retooling of the rich world of Kaiju for an era of cinematic universes and CGI. Last year’s Godzilla Vs. Kong managed an impressive $468 million globally at the box office mid-pandemic, galvanising fans’ enthusiasm with neon-lit punch-ups, a trip to the mythic Hollow Earth with everybody’s favourite cheeky monkey, and actual Mechagodzilla!
Back in January, we filled you in on the news that Apple TV are moving ahead with plans for a MonsterVerse spin-off series – Monarch, helmed by Star Trek: Enterprise veteran Chris Black and Hawkeye comics writer Matt Fraction. That show will dig into the history behind its titular shadowy scientific organisation, taking place in the aftermath of Godzilla’s battle with the Titans in San Francisco.
And now, we’ve learned via Variety that a follow-up to Godzilla Vs. Kong – which up until now has very much been up in the air (there was no post-credit sting, and Legendary have been tight-lipped on the topic) – is set to shoot later this year on Australia’s Golden Coast. This will be the third MonsterVerse entry shot down under, with King Of The Monsters and Kong: Skull Island having previously filmed on the Golden Coast and Southeast Queensland state.
Godzilla Vs. Kong director Adam Wingard may be busy at the moment with his upcoming Face-Off sequel, but he has said in the past he’d be game for a return to the MonsterVerse. Given that we last saw Kong on the Hollow Earth throne, all we can really say for now is – Long Live The King!
