Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be the first film in the series to be shown under a 12A certificate.
"Younger viewers could be frightened by some of the more intense scenes," a BBFC spokesman said. "At 12A we allow moderate level violence, but without focus on injuries or blood."
Younger children will still be able to see the film if accompanied by an adult. US censors have given the film a similar PG-13 rating.
