Actor Glenn Ford, who played Jonathan Kent in 1978’s Superman and enjoyed a lengthy career that included such films as Gilda, 3:10 To Yuma and The Blackboard Jungle, died yesterday.

His health had been suffering for some time, and he’d been forced to skip a birthday celebration held this May at the Egyptian Theater cinema in Hollywood. In his 52-year Hollywood career, he managed 85 films between 1939 and 1991.

"Acting is just being truthful," he once said. "I have to play myself. I'm not an actor who can take on another character, like Laurence Olivier. The worst thing I could do would be to play Shakespeare."

Ford was 90 when he died.

In further sad movies news, Psycho scriptwriter and co-creator of the original Outer Limits Joseph Stefano died on 25 August . A multi-talented man who danced, sang and played piano early in his career, he broke into writing through television and won serious acclaim for his work on Hitchcock's most famous film. He was 84.
