She's already attached to the character through Netflix's planned Carmen Sandiego animated series, which should be on the streaming service's screens next year. Now Gina Rodriguez is taking that a step further, making a deal to star in a live-action film based on the character for the company.

Originating in a video game, the character is a villainous mastermind who runs the criminal organisation VILE and is the nemesis of the ACME Detective Agency. The game and other products spun off from it are usually designed to educate kids about geography, maths, history and languages. She's been popular enough to have spawned books, TV shows, comics and board games. Disney considered making a movie of her starring Sandra Bullock in the 1990s and Jennifer Lopez was attached to the most recent attempt.

Netflix now has the live-action rights in addition to its animated series, and will be starting the search for a writer and director. Rodriguez is as busy as always besides her regular job on TV drama Jane The Virgin. She's on Netflix screens outside the States now in Annihilation and has a voice role in Bigfoot 'toon Smallfoot. She'll also be seen in the remake of Miss Bala, which will be out next February.
