While we've been used to seeing Gina Rodriguez in the sometimes dramatic but usually bubbly Jane The Virgin on the small screen, she's been finding more thriller-focused work in cinemas including Deepwater Horizon, Annihilation and this year's Miss Bala remake. With her show wrapping up this year, she's looking for more movie opportunities and has now signed on to star in post-apocalyptic Netflix pic Awake.

Kodachrome's Mark Raso is in the director's chair, working from a script he wrote with his brother Joseph, and Greg Poirier. Awake sees a sudden global event wipe out all electronics and snatch away humankind’s ability to sleep, causing chaos to start consuming the world. Only Jill (Rodriguez), an ex-soldier with a troubled past, may hold the key to a cure in the form of her own daughter. The question is, can Jill safely deliver her daughter and save the world before she herself loses her mind? Our guess at this point is a solid, "maybe?"

The film doesn't yet have a start date and it's too early to say when it'll be on the streaming service's servers. Rodriguez recently showed up in Netflix's Someone Great and will be voicing the title character in the Carmen Sandiego series. She's worked on director Miranda July's latest film and is playing Velma in the new animated Scooby Doo movie Scoob, due out next year.
