As she starts to wrap up her days starring on TV series Jane The Virgin, Gina Rodriguez is seeking out more film projects as her big screen career continues to grow. She's landed the lead in a long-gestating legal drama at Warner Bros. called Bobbie Sue.
The plot would see Rodriguez as the title character, who after being raised among five rowdy brothers in blue-collar South Boston, is a scrappy, headstrong young lawyer landing a career-making case with an upper crust law firm, only to realize she’s been hired for optics and not her expertise. But after discovering her powerful client, a lifelong idol and fellow Southie native, is trying to cover up exploiting workers within her company, Bobbie decides to take both her and the law firm on, caution and etiquette be damned.
This is a film the studio has been trying to make for around 11 years since it bought the original spec script from Russell Leigh Sharman, Owen Egerton, and Chris Mass. After a few attempts to get it on its feet – including one version it hoped would star Cameron Diaz – WB has locked in on Rodriguez to star and Uncle Drew's Charles Stone III to direct.
Rodriguez will next show up in thriller remake Miss Bala, due out on 15 March. She's also starring in Netflix rom-com Someone Great, which should hit the streaming service this year.
