The trailer for Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past, the new Matthew McConaughey rom-com spin on A Christmas Carol, has gone online – and we won’t lie to you, readers: if you’re looking for a little warmth on this horrendously cold day, you’re not likely to find it here.

A quick recap of the plot: McConaughey plays Connor Mead (apparently, a play on ‘Ebeneezer Scrooge’ wasn’t possible), an absolute cad who doesn’t just two-time ladies; he four-times them. Boo! Hiss! Etc.

But when he goes to a weekend retreat for a family wedding, he runs into Jennifer Garner’s Jenny – the one that got away, and now the one who wants to cut off his unmentionables.

Mead is a guy who needs help – and it comes in the form of Michael Douglas’ sleazy dead Uncle, who tells him that three ghosts will visit him, in an attempt to change the error of his ways. Cue the Ghost of Girlfriends Past (Emma Stone), who shows him what life was like in a simpler, happier time when he and Jenny were in love. Aaah… will this awaken Connor’s long-dormant romantic side and prompt him to reconnect with the woman he loves? You betcha.

With director Mark Waters – who has a history of supernatural comedies like this, with Freaky Friday, 13 Going On 30 and Just Like Heaven on his CV – **Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past **looks slick enough. But it also seems utterly predictable (there’s even a bit where a ghost walks through a living character, just to show off special effects) and, crucially, relatively laugh-free. Let’s hope that the best jokes are in the movie, not the trailer (that’d be a first) and that the easy charm of McConaughey, Garner and Douglas can paper over some of the cracks apparent in this trailer.
